01|What is IWAMURO AIR?
A residency where artists and local communities grow together. IWAMURO AIR is a performing arts artist-in-residence program based in the historic hot spring town of Iwamuro, Niigata, Japan. Artists stay in the community as residents rather than visitors, engaging with local people and the surrounding environment while developing their artistic practice and research. Rather than focusing solely on creating new works, IWAMURO AIR values the process of building lasting relationships between artists, local communities, and the place itself. Together with local residents, artists, and community coordinators, we explore new possibilities for culture, creativity, and community through the residency.
02|Our Philosophy
Not using a place, but building relationships with it. At IWAMURO AIR, we believe that meaningful artistic practice begins with living alongside people. Even during a short residency, sharing everyday life—walking through the town, gathering around the table, and engaging in conversation—creates relationships that extend beyond the residency itself. Rather than offering a fixed program, we continue to explore what an artist residency can be through practice, together with participating artists and local residents. For us, the residency is not only a place to create art—it is a place where people, ideas, and communities grow together.
03|Why Iwamuro & Tomoya
Where people, place, and creativity naturally come together. Iwamuro is a hot spring town with more than 300 years of history. Its rich natural environment, welcoming culture, and long-standing openness to artistic activities provide a unique setting for creative practice. At the heart of the residency is Tomoya, an open community share house. More than accommodation, Tomoya is a place where local residents, students, travelers, artists, and newcomers gather to share meals, conversations, and everyday life. Living together—rather than simply staying together—creates opportunities for genuine encounters, new perspectives, and lasting connections.
04 | Residency & Community
Living together. Creating together. Growing together. At IWAMURO AIR, we see residency itself as part of the creative process. Artists spend their time walking through the town, meeting local people, developing their artistic practice, hosting workshops, opening rehearsals, sharing meals, and reflecting together at the end of the residency. Residents are also encouraged to document their experience through journals, offering new perspectives on Iwamuro and contributing to the ongoing story of the project. Since its launch in 2024, IWAMURO AIR has welcomed artists from the performing arts field whose practices have inspired new conversations, community programs, and collaborative initiatives.
